Super Mario 3D Land

Super Mario 3D Land has been heralded as the game to prove the 3DS. I mean, you hear it coming from everyone, from the hair-trigger fanboys to the strictly pragmatic to the downright cynics. The real fact of the matter is, I haven't been really paying much attention to it. Nothing about it has grabbed me as particularly interesting. But, since I'm somewhat skeptical of the system myself, I figured it would only be fair to give the game its fair shake.

And... what can I say? It's Super Mario Brothers. In 3D. I really don't feel too strongly one way or the other about it. I've made it through the first five worlds, and I don't feel particularly compelled to go on.

People have said that this proves the concept of 3D gaming, that it brings something to the table that you wouldn't otherwise have. I'm glad they do, but I don't see it myself.

Thing is, I've long listed myself as a Nintendo fan, and I've always pointed to the Mario series in particular as my favorite games of all time. So what's the problem?

It might just be that I'm old and jaded and nothing surprises me anymore. I feel the same way about it that I did about New Super Mario Brothers on the DS: it remixes old Mario elements without feeling especially new.

I guess there's still Wright vs. Layton to look forward to, provided it gets a Western release. Till then? Gonna have to stick with my DSi.
